Professor of Islamic and Arabic studies at Brigham Young University, Daniel C. Petersen provides this insight into something that our critics miss. If the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ is faulty, if it is based on hallucinations and lies, then why are there far too many credible witnesses to the Resurrected Savior, and the most fundamental pillar of the Mormon Faith – Divine and inspired Revelation from the Father and the Son? It is something that critics miss on a constant basis. It is the means by which they hook, swindle, and persuade many questioning members to abandon their own testimony. Once they leave, there is anger and resentment based on a false premise that the Church has lied to them.
Yet, ask yourself, if the Church had lied, if Joseph Smith had truly lied, then why would so many innocent people give their own lives and devotions over to the truth? Why would men become renowned spiritual leaders and go through a spiritual change before the eyes of those they lead.
The real question is not so much as to whether or not Joseph Smith lied, it should be asked, why are our critics lying about the Church and lying about Joseph Smith?
